mean-spirited

The world turns, burning

spinning out of control.

Misguided men

fight for dominion of belief,

maps mistaken for doctrines

grasped for far too long.

Land

burned beyond recognition,

orchards turned to cinder,

doorways turned to ash,

in the name of all that is

holy and horrifying.

Water

fills with foreign objects

plastic, toys, splintered beams.

Letters never delivered,

pushed back to shore.

Air

acrid, noxious, toxic,

bonedust blended with gunpowder.

The sky, a mouth

swallowing prayers whole.

And the spirits hover over the ruins.

First words never spoken,

last words never heard,

a life that never took hold.

Palestine’s children deserve

to live, to grow, to be free.
